From 13 October 2026, every Victorian rental agreement needs a two-yearly electrical safety check — including older tenancies previously exempt. If the last check is unknown, arrange one now.

How long must a rental provider keep electrical safety check records?

Keep the most recent electrical safety-check record until the record of the next safety check is created. Consumer Affairs Victoria does not set a five-year retention period for this electrical record; the practical rule is to retain the current record with the property paperwork and replace it only once the next compliant check is documented. Before entering a rental agreement, the rental provider must disclose the date of the last electrical safety check and any outstanding recommendations. For a Ballarat property, that makes the record useful at sale, renewal and change-of-manager time: it establishes whether a check is due and what, if anything, still needs rectification. Give the most recent record to the renter within seven days after receiving their written request.
