From 13 October 2026, every Victorian rental agreement needs a two-yearly electrical safety check — including older tenancies previously exempt. If the last check is unknown, arrange one now.

How often do rental electrical safety checks need to be done in Victoria?

Every two years. A Victorian rental provider must arrange an electrical safety check of all switchboards, wiring and fittings at least once every two years, carried out by a licensed electrician. The two-year clock runs from the last check rather than from the tenancy start, so a change of renter does not reset it. If you cannot establish when a Ballarat property was last checked, the safe assumption is that it is due — the records requirement exists precisely because these dates are otherwise easy to lose track of. For rental providers with several properties it is usually simpler to bring them onto a common schedule and have them checked together rather than tracking separate dates.
